Practically all of us are now aware that the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) will come in to full force and effect on 25th May 2018. This Regulation builds and expands upon the current Data Protection regime which has been enforced in Ireland for a number of decades. For some businesses the GDPR will have a profound impact, but for others a few small steps is all that will be required.
We can say with utmost certainty is that there is no “one size fits all” solution when it comes to Data Protection. Mícheál O’ Dowd, Principal of O’ Dowd Solicitors has written extensively in the area of Data Protection and his book Cyber Law in Ireland is one of the key texts in the area. This short talk, derived from a recent lecture to MBA students in University College Cork will explore what Data Protection is, and what the GDPR might mean for businesses.
